Hoodia is a natural supplement derived from an African cactus. Over the past few years it has become increasingly popular as a weight loss aid. However the side effects of hoodia have not yet been thoroughly researched. This is because the phenomenon is so new.
People who use it do not report any negative side effects. Other diet pills often cause symptoms such as increased heart rate, trembling, dizziness and over-stimulation.
Some people have reported that they got an upset stomach when they first started taking hoodia. Because this side effect has not been studied, it is not known why people get an upset stomach when first taking hoodia. It could be as simple as the body just getting used to less food.
Jasjit Bindra was a researcher at Pfizer who studied hoodia. He reported that there was some indication that hoodia might have a negative effect on the liver. There is an active ingredient in hoodia that may cause this and there is the possibility that if this is the case, then hoodia might interact with some prescribed medications. While no studies have been done on this, it is anticipated that these studies might be forthcoming.
Hoodia tricks the brain into thinking the body’s blood sugar is at the right level. If you are diabetic, this could cause problems because their blood sugar levels could plummet while taking hoodia. A diabetic might not realize how low their blood sugar is because their body's signals are not giving the right message about blood sugar levels.
Hoodia also suppresses signs of thirst. This could lead you to not drink enough fluids. Again, this is especially dangerous for diabetics. While taking hoodia, pay attention to your fluid intake. Drink even if you don’t feel thirsty.
When you slow down your eating, your metabolism also slows down. Too much hoodia could slow your metabolism dramatically. The faster your metabolism is, the faster you will lose weight.
Pregnant and nursing women should not take hoodia. The side effects for pregnant and nursing women has not been studied so it is a good idea to play it safe. If you are healthy and your only goal is to lose weight, hoodia is excellent to help you reach your goal.
