What is Hoodia, Does it Work and Other Hoodia Questions Answered

Hoodia Diet Pills

Hoodia diet pills have grown in popularity since about 2003. Because of hoodia’s reputation as a diet supplement without side effects, the demand for it continues to grow. However, it is always wise to do a little research before hopping on the hoodia diet pill phenomenon.

Hoodia gordonii (the type of hoodia that works as a diet pill) comes from Africa where native Bushmen used the hoodia cactus plant to suppress their appetite. This allows the hunters to hunt longer without needing to eat. Hoodia also suppresses thirst.

In the 1960s, scientists started to look at the hoodia plant to see if it could work as a weight loss aid. They results of the studies were that they found an active ingredient, p57, that had steroidal glycosides. The glycosides play a part in controlling the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus sends messages to the central nervous system telling the body that it did not need food. When we are stuffed from a meal, this is the same message that gets sent by the hypothalamus. Hoodia fools the body into thinking it is full even if you have not eaten recently.

The research showed that hoodia did cause weight loss due to reduced appetites of the study participants. Indeed, the studies showed that the participants were cutting their food consumption by half. The problem was scientists could not make diet pills from the hoodia extract which was not stable enough.

Hoodia has since become accessible in its natural form. Mind you, the product is dried and powdered and then formed into tablets or capsules and presented as hoodia diet pills.

While there are dosages suggested for hoodia diet pills, these dosages tend to fall into a range of dosages depending on your resistance to hoodia. Usually people start with a low dosage and increase it if they need to. The dosage is not related to the person's weight. That is, a heavy person does not need to take more than a smaller person to make it work.

Basically, if your dosage does not lower your appetite, then increase it to a higher dosage. The manufacturer will have instructions for the recommended dosage amount. Also, because hoodia also suppressed your thirst, you have to remember to drink lots of fluids or you will get dehydrated.

If you combine hoodia diet pills with proper nutrition and exercise, you will find yourself getting thinner and healthier with very little effort. The wisdom is that hoodia does not have side effects. There have not been many studies on the side effects but because the hoodia plant has been used in Africa for centuries without any apparent damage, the future looks great for hoodia.
