Hoodia is a weight loss product that has entranced the nation. The name, hoodia, is snapy and catchy. People hear that it works but the big question that people ask is “What is hoodia?” Well, here is the answer.
Hoodia is a cactus plant from Africa. The product curbs your appetite. Over and over, hoodia has been proven to be a successful appetite suppressant. That is the what of hoodia.
The how and why of hoodia is another question. Why indeed does hoodia work so well? Why does the name swoop across the country with such praise attached?
The old fashioned way of suppressing appetites involved prescription and over the counter (OTC) drugs. If you wanted medicinal help to lose weight in the 1950s, the help you got was often worse than being overweight. Back then the solution was a prescription for amphetamines.
Sure, you lost weight. But the pills were addictive. Even worse, these treatment were hard on the system and often the cause of a health problems including heart disease.
When the issue of amphetamine addiction was recognized, the medical profession turns to softer products that you could buy OTC. By the 1970s and 1980s there was a wide variety of appetite suppressants and other prescription and OTC solutions.
Some worked but some of these treatments caused strokes in some consumers. After the disaster of people dying from these drugs, the medications were modified and the dangerous ingredients were removed. Of course, this meant that the products were not as useful for the purpose of appetite suppressing.
When hoodia appeared, it was welcomed. It was effective and it does not have a negative effect on the heart or the brain like the previous products. Hoodia was deemed to be safe as well as effective.
Mind you, even though hoodia suppresses your appetite safely, you do have to work with it. Think of it as meeting hoodia halfway. If you eat too much junk food, all the hoodia in the world will not help you meet your weight loss goal. While eating less junk food is better than eating more junk food, you need to eat a healthier diet for long term success. Keep the fats and refined sugar under control. Use hoodia to do away with hunger cravings which is a side effect of cutting calories. Hoodia is not a miracle cure. Hoodia is a tool that can help you dig your way out of the world of poor health associated with obesity.
